Water Treatment
Virology is the study of viruses, focusing on their structure, classification, replication, and interactions with host organisms, including humans, animals, plants, and bacteria.
Meiji Techno Microscopes play a key role in water treatment by allowing technicians and microbiologists to monitor and analyze microorganisms, particulates, and other contaminants. Here are the main types of microscopes used in water treatment facilities, and how they’re applied:
1. Meiji Techno Compound Biological Light Microscopes (Optical Microscopes)Use: Routine monitoring of microbial content in water and sludge.
- Brightfield Microscopy – Basic form; used to identify general bacteria, protozoa, and algae.
- Phase Contrast Microscopy – Enhances contrast in transparent specimens; useful for identifying live protozoa and filamentous bacteria in activated sludge.
- Fluorescence Microscopy – Used when specific fluorescent stains (e.g., DAPI or acridine orange) are applied to detect DNA or specific microbial groups.
Applications:
- Identifying filamentous bacteria in activated sludge (helps diagnose bulking issues).
- Checking for presence of indicator organisms (e.g., coliforms).
- Monitoring protozoa, algae, and rotifers to assess water quality.
2. Electron Microscopes ( Meiji Techno currently has no microscopes for this class)
Use: Detailed analysis at very high magnifications (not typically used in day-to-day water plant operations due to cost and complexity).
- Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) – Gives 3D images of surfaces, useful for studying biofilms and pipe fouling.
- Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) – Shows internal cell structures; used for research-level investigations.
Applications:
- Research on membrane fouling in ultrafiltration or reverse osmosis systems.
- Studying biofilm composition on water system surfaces.
3. Meiji Techno EMZ Series Stereomicroscopes (Dissecting Microscopes)
Use: Low magnification view of larger particles or organisms in sludge or surface water.
Applications:
- Observing macroinvertebrates or larger sediment particles.
- Preliminary screening of debris or large contaminants.
Common Parameters Observed with Microscopy:
- Bacteria types and morphology (e.g., rods, cocci, filaments)
- Protozoa and metazoans (indicator of biological activity)
- Algae species (especially in surface water treatment)
- Sludge settleability and floc structure in wastewater treatment
Summary Table:
| Microscope Type | Typical Use in Water Treatment |
| Light (Brightfield) | General microbial monitoring |
| Phase Contrast | Activated sludge evaluation |
| Fluorescence | Specific pathogen or DNA/RNA detection |
| Electron (SEM/TEM) | Advanced research on fouling/biofilms |
| Stereomicroscope | Macro-level inspection |
