Embryo Collection
Embryo collection is the study of techniques and processes used to retrieve, handle, and preserve embryos for purposes such as assisted reproduction, genetic research, and conservation. This field encompasses methods for collecting embryos from humans or animals, ensuring their viability, and storing them for future use in fertility treatments or scientific studies.
Microscopes play a crucial role in embryo collection in both clinical settings (like IVF clinics) and research environments (such as developmental biology labs).
Here’s how they’re used at different stages:
1. Oocyte (Egg) Identification and Retrieval
- Meiji Techno EMZ Stereomicroscopes are used to visually identify and isolate mature oocytes (eggs) from ovarian follicles or aspirated fluids.
- They allow embryologists to see eggs clearly in follicular fluid and separate them from debris.
2. Insemination and Fertilization (e.g., IVF or ICSI)
- Meiji Techno TC5000 Inverted microscopes are used for:
- In Vitro Fertilization (IVF): Visualizing eggs and sperm interaction.
- Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI): Directly injecting a single sperm into an egg under high magnification (usually 400x or higher).with micromanipulators.
3. Embryo Assessment and Selection
- Microscopes are used to monitor the development of embryos post-fertilization (cleavage, blastocyst formation).
- Time-lapse imaging systems integrated with microscopes allow constant observation without disturbing embryo conditions.
- Embryologists check:
- Cell division timing
- Cell symmetry
- Fragmentation level
- Blastocyst quality
4. Embryo Biopsy and Genetic Testing
- High-resolution microscopes assist in laser-assisted biopsy, where a few cells are removed from the embryo (for PGD/PGT) without damaging it.
5. Embryo Transfer and Cryopreservation
- Microscopes are used to confirm embryo integrity before transfer into the uterus or before/after vitrification (freezing).
Common Types of Microscopes Used:
| Microscope Type | Purpose |
| Stereo Microscope | Egg identification, oocyte retrieval |
| Inverted Microscope | Embryo culture monitoring, ICSI |
| Fluorescence Microscope | Genetic screening (e.g., FISH) |
| Time-Lapse Microscopy | Real-time embryo development tracking |
