Brightfield: The simplest of all the metallurgical optical microscopy illumination techniques. Sample illumination is transmitted or incident (i.e., illuminated from below or above and observed from above) white light and contrast in the sample is caused by absorbance of some of the transmitted or incident light in dense areas of the sample. Brightfield microscopy is the simplest of a range of techniques used for illumination of samples in light microscopes and its simplicity makes it a popular technique. The typical appearance of a brightfield microscopy image is dependent on the type of illumination technique used.

Darkfield: In optical microscopy, darkfield describes microscopy methods, in both light and electron microscopy, which exclude the unscattered beam from the image. As a result, the field around the specimen is generally dark. Darkfield microscopy is a very simple yet effective technique and well suited for contrast with metallurgical type samples and to analyze and visually test new and existing materials to identify their properties and characteristics for the development or improvement of new or existing products.
Simple Polarizing Light: Transverse wave light whose vibration possess direction is called polarized light. Light from an ordinary light source (natural light) that vibrates in random directions is called nonpolarized light. In contrast, while light with vertical vibration that travels within a single plane is called linearly polarized light, circularly polarized light and elliptically polarized light are types of light in which the vibration plane rotates forward. A polarizing plate (polarizing filter) or polarizing prism is often used as the device to change natural light to linearly polarized light.
The MC-60 & MC-60T Series are capable of brightfield, darkfield, and simple polarization observation modes. They are composed of high quality microscope components, precision X-Y stages and durable heavy duty stands. The MC-60 & MC-60T Series measuring microscopes are available with 2-axis and 3-axis electronic digital readouts in inches and metric. Mitutoyo Digimatic Micrometer heads have serial output for SPC applications. MC Series Systems are available in 110 or 220 volt, incident or transmitted, binocular or trinocular configurations.
